SSCA Political Communication Division

The Political Communication Division invites submissions for competitive papers, panels, roundtable discussions, workshops, or spotlight scholars for the 2010 convention. Submissions addressing the conference theme, “Positive Communication,” are especially welcomed. All submissions should be sent electronically to Bill Edwards edwards_bill@colstate.edu.

Deadlines and technicalities

The regular deadline of SSCA 2010 submissions is Friday 11 September 2009 (8 PM EST). The Political Communication Division will accept competitive papers until Friday 25 September 2009 (noon EST). All other proposals and nominations will adhere to the regular deadline, 11 September. All submissions will be acknowledged within 24 hours, or you should assumed that there was a failure in transmission.

Panel proposals and papers need to be submitted as attachments. Only MS Word, Wordperfect, and PDF files can be accepted.

Current plans:

1. To have a round table discussion where 8-12 instructors share syllabi, instructional assignment or project, reading lists, critique of textbooks, etc. While the format is different, this round table will have the benefit of a gifts program for our division. If you would be willing to commit to be a contributor, send Bill Edwards email.

2. To spotlight a political communication scholar. This person and at least two or three colleagues, former students, etc., would need to commit to participate. Nominations are welcomed and needed.

3. To have competitive papers. There will be a top paper award. If we have at least four students papers submitted, we will also recognize a top student paper. The title page should be submitted separately.

4. To have a current events panel. Interest in political communication builds on current event. It would be interesting to have a panel of scholars who will agree to do a critical analysis or research-based presentations on selected events which occur after September 2009. Volunteers!

5. To have panel proposals. Panels which build on the convention theme “Positive Communication” and the host city or region are particularly welcomed. Panel proposals will need to have in addition to a title, a description of what an audience should expect to hear. Each participant should have a separate topic, title, or thesis which indicates how they will contribute to the discussion.
