Department of Communication

Located in the historic Carpenters Building at the River Park Campus, the Department of Communication prepares students for leadership roles in a broad range of communication careers. Students desiring to continue their education in graduate or professional schools find the critical thinking proficiencies achieved through an undergraduate degree in communication to be invaluable.

Courses within the curriculum balance the theoretical foundations critical to successful communication campaigns with opportunities to strategically apply this knowledge in learning labs outside the classroom through an integrated program of service learning initiatives. The Department of Communication ranks among the campus leaders in service learning hours provided to its majors. These projects range from partnerships with the Muscogee County School System Adult Education Program to developing a reality television pilot for a television production company. In addition, students in the program annually compete in the National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC) sponsored by the American Advertising Federation.

By combining the academic learning objectives of the curriculum with the experiential knowledge attained through service learning programs, faculty position students to be successful in the highly competitive and diverse communication industry. Given the global reach of this field, faculty emphasize study-abroad opportunities as well as incorporating multi-cultural perspectives in courses so as to provide students with the global competencies required by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia.
