COMM 4000 Exit assessment

The Course: Communication majors take this course to fulfill a university baccalaureate requirement. Prerequisites: Communication major and Senior Standing. (S/U grading)

To fulfill the requirements of this course, the student must prepare a properly formatted portfolio based on major coursework, make an adequate presentation (including computer-generated slides or web-based components) to a faculty panel, and respond appropriately to the faculty panel's questioning with regards to the student's portfolio and presentation. The portfolio will be submitted in two formats: Notebook and digital (CD or DVD). Satisfactory completion of the course is required for graduation.

Rationale: The exit examination is designed to give both the student and faculty the opportunity to re-examine our communication program in light of the student’s experience. The materials prepared can be used by students in a portfolio for a job-search, and the faculty will use the data gathered to insure that the program maintains standards required for continued accreditation.

Requirements: The portfolio should include a current resume and four approved projects. The four projects should each come from a different upper division communication course. The portfolio may contain audio, visual, or computer materials as well as traditional text. Each project should be prefaced by a statement which introduces the project, explains which curriculum objective(s) is(are) well demonstrated in the project, and, if the project was a joint projects with others, a description of what work the student contributed to that project. The portfolio should be organized, written, illustrated, and bound in a manner appropriate for a beginning professional. A digital copy of the portfolio will remain on file in the department. The student will have the portfolio notebook returned after satisfactorily completing the oral interview.

The student's work should demonstrate his/her success in achieving the degree program’s six learning objectives. The curriculum seeks to develop:

A. Communication skills (e.g., interpersonal, writing, speaking, and listening)

B. Production skills (e.g., computer applications, multimedia presentations)

C. Research skills (e.g., documentation, literature reviews, surveys, research design, data collection and analysis)

D. Adaptability in responding to people (e.g., age, gender, cultural differences) and situations.

E. Knowledge of communication (e.g., history, theories, concepts, models, and career opportunities)

F. Critical/analytical skills (e.g., problem analysis, theoretical understanding and application)
